My New Live Web Show

app full proxy.php 540x85 My New Live Web Show

A few weeks ago I decided to add something onto my plate – a live web show on UStream. I’m quite familiar with live web TV – I’ve practically been hosting live online red carpets since the technology was available…but I’ve never done my own show.

Make no mistake – this isn’t a studio set show with three cameras, 4 guests, and a live performance – it’s just me and my laptop, often getting off track, nervously getting back “on” track, talking about what’s on my mind, and interacting with people who are watching. It’s not exactly professional, but….if I’m trying to become even more entrenched in this whole web entertainment world, it does help to understand how live web TV works.

So I launched my show on UStream a few weeks ago – The Taryn Ten at 10pm EST - not without a few (okay, a lot!) of technical glitches, of course. Toad Saulnier from All American Rejects was my first guest, and Bart, my hamster, was my one live audience member.

I’m now getting ready for my fourth “show” tonight and already I’m seeing what works…and what doesn’t. I don’t think the Top Ten list works. It’s hard to spend 30 minutes moving through a top ten list – it almost needs to just be a “bit” up front and then done with.

I LOVE having guests and taking questions from viewers. That’s my favorite part – so I’m going to try to focus on that from here on out. I want the talk to be entertainment/ web geek centric — so my guests will be anyone from web celebs to comic book loving actors.

This week, actress/supermodel Jaime King (Sin City/My Bloody Valentine) is stopping by. I have a goal  - by Feb 1, I want to be producing my show in a professional studio with three cameras. I want to be able to cut to cool web clips and have a cute little jingle intro play in the beginning. I want it to feel…like a real show.

But I need your help. If you guys have seen a lot of live web tv, tell me what you’d like to see more of, and what you DON’T like. Let me know if you agree that I should ditch the Top Ten theme and just maybe do a little Top Ten bit at the very beginning of the show each week. Let me know what you think of doing a weekly giveaway, your thoughts on the title, and if you have ideas for an animated sequence at the beginning. If you or your friends know how to create animated sequences, let me know, as I will need to find someone to do that!

Thanks so much for your suggestions, and here’s a stream of the show if you want to check out previous ‘episodes’ (I’m warning you, it’s rough):

all girls

Wow! For everyone out there who emailed, tweeted, Facebooked, Dugg, favorited, and blogged about The Booby Scare – thank you! The point of this campaign was to create awareness and we are so happy that so many people have helped us by jumping on the “spread the word” bandwagon.

To sum it up: The Booby Scare has earned more than 340,000 hits on Funny or Die (it’s also on YouTube, Break, Amazon Video, etc), and made the front page of Digg and the #1 Top in Video Widget on it’s release date.

A special thank-you to E! News, OMG.Yahoo, USA Today, and K-ROQ Radio for their coverage, as well as the following blogs:

THE BOOBY SCARE Featuring Alyson Hannigan, Emily Deschanel, Kat McPhee, Minka Kelly and Jaime King – watch more funny videos

For all of those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer:

This is an update my previous blog about the campaign, but I am thrilled to finally launch the first video in a series of comedic PSA’s called Tit for Tat, a breast cancer awareness campaign that Jaime King and I are writing and producing with the support of Stand Up 2 Cancer.

This is a cause incredibly close to my heart, as I have had many family and friends inflicted with the disease. Some won the fight, others have not. It is SO IMPORTANT to be aware of the methods of breast cancer prevention and early detection. If you’d like to donate to accelerated cancer research, please visit www.su2c.org.

The wonderful team at Her Energy, a pink-lemonade energy drink made for females (it’s got lotsa vitamins and is oh-so-tasty, too!) is sponsoring the six-month, six-episode viral campaign, so a HUGE thanks to them for making this happen.

Last month marked the shoot of The Booby Scare. Directed by Steve Carr (Mall Cop, Dr. Doolittle 2), Booby Scare stars the lovely Jaime King (Sin City, Pearl Harbor), Emily Deschanel (Spiderman 2, Bones), Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights, 500 Days of Summer), Katherine McPhee (American Idol, House Bunny), and Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother, American Pie.) We all had a BLAST. (See photos from set below.)

Expect to see our next episode released in November. And DON’T FORGET YOUR SELF BREAST EXAM!

“Dewana’s Bridal” Short Film

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Last week I wrapped production on the short film “Dewana’s Bridal,” produced by/starring my dear friend Jaime King and directed by Ace Norton. The cast also includes Selma Blair, Jaime Lynn Sigler, Kick Gurrey, Betsy Rue, and Elena Satine. We all had a blast and got to play such interesting, tormented characters (an actor’s dream!)

Here’s a photo of Jaime and I on set with all of our goth makeup :)

Taryn’s Top Ten List for the Month of May

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

1. I visited Catalina with my family for the first time ever! We rented a little golf cart and drove around the whole island!

2. I was pulled over and issued a ticket for the first time since I moved to Cali. The next week, I paid off a ticket from one of those red light cameras ($500!! No joke. Do NOT try to race through a yellow in Beverly Hills.) Now trying to lighten my lead foot.

3. I bought canvas and paints in an attempt to foster my own creativity. All of the supplies have yet to be used.

4. I read 5 books – Highly recommend: Wasted (so sad) and The Outliers (so interesting).

5. Jaime King and I teamed up to do some female-centric writing together – the first of which you’ll see in a slew of comedic shorts this October.  More on this later…

6. I discovered The Little Next Door restaurant. If you live in LA and can’t quite afford the ridiculous prices of The Little Door (the most romantic restaurant of all time), then PLEASE check out The Little Next Door. It’s literally right next door to the little door, half the price, and has cute little twinkly lights and mini brulees.

7. I finished my first book proposal….which I will be pitching this month to various publishers. I can’t say what it’s about…yet. But I will. Promise.

8. Acted in 2 new really funny shorts – one is MUSICAL, yay – and the other is with my uber-talented friend Todd Strauss Schulson (http://www.ulteriorproductions.com/). And I’ve got a few more of my own up my sleeve in June.

9. I ate an entire 24-pack of Crumbs cupcakes in a 2 day period. No joke. I felt a little like Kobayashi. Yes!

10. I actually created a budget for myself. Yes, a budget. Needless to say, I am already over the limit for the month. But I did cut out the Coffee Bean lattes, monthly manicures, and traded in valet for metered parking. The result? I’m back to making my own coffee, painting my own nails, and arriving 5 minutes late to every meeting b/c I forget to calculate the time it takes to find metered parking. Still, that’s $200/month…SAVED! (Err…ok. I spent it on a couple of cute summer dresses. Guilty.)

11. (Sorry, had to add onto the list.) I have had WAY too much fun using twitter and trying out new social media sites. So if you haven’t added me on twitter, please do so – www.twitter.com/tarynsouthern.

xoxo
